I’ve done a paeds run recently which has made me feel comfortable in doing catheter specs on young children. But prior to that had always referred to paeds because I didn’t have the experience to feel confident doing them. It’s a great skill to have as if it’s negative you’ve excluded one of your differentials in a child with vomiting, and you can certainly sound more experienced when talking to paeds colleagues for advice after this if you need to. It also really speeds things up instead of waiting for a bag urine and then a clean catch and no doubt speeds up definitive treatment of a UTI is proven in a sick child.
